Design and Technology                                              Designing - Making - Evaluating 

'Design and technology is an inspiring, rigorous and practical subject. Using creativity and imagination, pupils design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values.' DfE

Our design and technology curriculum covers all of the age related content from the national curriculum, combined with additional learning that we believe is important to pupils as they make progress through our schools. We use the design and technology curriculum progression grid (link below) to support planning and assessment of this subject. Teachers incorporate different degrees of technical knowledge and practical experience as pupils progress through their design and technology learning journey.

We work hard to plan our topics with relevant links to other areas of the school curriculum. For example, KS1 pupils complete a linked project on the Polar Express in both English and design technology lessons, learning about wheels and axles, and making carriages for the Polar Express train. 

 

 

In KS2, as part of Y3&4 study of Viking history, pupils designed and made life sized Viking long boats using natural materials from the outdoors. 

 

 

We teach our DT units in both key stages in half termly blocks, rotating the focus around the curriculum headings of Construction, Textiles and Food. We use an age and ability related pupil planning work booklet, that structures the learning and enables all pupils to access and familiarise themselves with the learning structure of:
